Around The World But Always At Home
Katia explains how one close mentor shaped her life goals in making a difference around the world.
Success in my opinion should never be measured by the accomplishments one has made. And to be honest, I think the concept in itself is unique because we have our own different stories to tell. It is with these lessons that I found my true passion in Communications from a close mentor whom I admired all my life. I’ve had plenty of mentors and I am truly thankful for all of them. Yet, without this person in particular I would not have made it where I am today.
My aunt has always been a source of inspiration since I can remember. Born from humble backgrounds, she sacrificed much of her life for success and to finally help my family and I. Raised with this lifestyle myself, I was taught to be humble, never take things for granted and always take advantage of the resources and skills available to succeed. My aunt personified this belief in her everyday life. As a former factory worker, she understood the struggles of living in minimum wage. As a nurse, she learned to stand up for herself to do her job to the best of her abilities. And as a human being, she knew that giving back to those in need was just as important.
With her encouragement, I learned to tackle challenges and to face them head on with as much determination as possible. Her courageous attitude in the face of such adversity prompted me to do the same. I wanted to give a voice to those who were disadvantaged and so with the lessons I learned, I found my passion in writing and languages. I took the leap to combine both hobbies into a career, traveling the world through fellowships, scholarships, and gaining wonderful work experiences in diverse backgrounds. Her mentoring helped shape my career goals from seeking fulfillment where I live to looking beyond my borders in doing what’s right.
A mentor and inspiration, my aunt gave me the tools to succeed and I am truly grateful for her help. She is a true pride in not just my family but for all Hispanics as well. Her values will undoubtedly shape me as I continue this long road to making a difference in the lives of many.
